METEOROLOGIST RACHAEL PEART

"rah-shell"

about me

Hello! My name is Rachael Peart and I am currently the weekend evening meteorologist at WVEC (ABC) in Norfolk, Virginia. Previously, I covered weekend mornings/noon at KWWL and I also worked as the weekend and then morning meteorologist at HMTV6 in Hagerstown, Maryland.

My interest in weather began, like many others, as a young child. During an elementary school science class, I no less than obsessed with cloud types. Namely: stratus, cumulus and cirrus. I could not seem to wrap my head around the unique characteristics of each in my elementary school class. Even after that lesson was over, I continued to watch the clouds whenever I could. My mornings began with watching the Weather Channel instead of cartoons in the mornings as I was getting ready for school - searching for answers.

I earned my meteorology degree from Penn State University (We Are!). While at Penn State I participated in the Campus Weather Service (CWS), in both the forecasting and communications divisions. CWS gave me the opportunity to not only work on and off screen, but with radio as well. I also earned a minor in Spanish, which I sometimes speak a little of behind the scenes.

My goal is to educate the public on weather phenomena and keep them safe when the time comes. Hopefully through doing this I can inspire the next generation to explore STEM fields.

Outside of meteorology, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, trying my hand and new crafts or recipes and volunteering when my schedule allows. I am a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, American Meteorological Society, and National Weather Association. I am also a lupus advocate.
